  • Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, birth control pills, and hormonal fluctuations can trigger conditions like melasma, causing dark patches, especially on the face.
  • Inflammation: Skin injuries, acne, or inflammation can leave behind dark marks known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
  • Genetics: Some in Hyperpigmentation, characterized by patches of darker skin, can result from various causes and manifest in different types.

Melasma

MELASMA
MELASMA

Melasma, also known as Chloasma, is a common skin condition characterized by the development of dark and discoloured patches on the skin. It normally arises on the forehead, nose, cheeks, chin and upper lip. These patches are typically brown or greyish in colour and usually appear on areas of the face that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the forehead, cheeks, nose, and upper lip.

Melasma is more prevalent in women, especially during pregnancy (known as “pregnancy mask”) or when taking hormonal contraceptives. Sun exposure is a significant factor in triggering or worsening melasma. While the exact cause is not fully understood, hormonal changes, genetics, and ultraviolet (UV) light exposure are believed to play key roles.

Though melasma doesn’t pose any health risks, it can be a cosmetic concern for some individuals. Prevention and management often involve sun protection, including the use of sunscreen and sun-protective clothing, along with certain topical treatments prescribed by dermatologists or Skilled skin therapists. In some cases, melasma may fade on its own, especially if related to hormonal changes, but it can be persistent and may require ongoing care to manage its appearance. We encourage you to book your Free Consultation at Beauty Aura Skin Clinic for proper diagnosis and personalized treatment plans.

An exception to this is melasma which, despite being classified as a chronic condition, can be effectively managed over time. Melasma which has been triggered by pregnancy often appears at the end of pregnancy.
